Side effects of Fluticasone propionate nasal spray 50mcg

Fluticasone propionate nasal spray 50 mcg is a glucocorticoid class of medications that is used to treat the symptoms of asthma, allergic rhinitis, and nasal polyps. The active component of Fluticasone propionate nasal spray 50 mcg is Fluticasone propionate that binds with high affinity to glucocorticoid receptors and blocks the release of substances that cause inflammation and allergic reactions. The drug is administrated intra nasally and recommended as adult dose of 2 sprays in each nostril once a day i.e. 50 mcg of Fluticasone propionate in each spray and a total daily dose, 200 mcg or 1 spray in each nostril twice a day i.e. 50 mcg of Fluticasone propionate in each spray and a total daily dose, 100 mcg for adolescents and children, aged 4 years and older. The most common side effects of Flonase (Fluticasone) include:

  • Cough
  • Nosebleeds
  • Nausea
  • Menstrual problems
  • Vomiting
  • Sore throat
  • Sneezing
  • Back pain
  • Loss of interest in sex
  • Headache

Flonase has also been associated with hypersensitivity reactions (such as anaphylaxis, itching, facial swelling, and skin rashes). In case of co-administration of Nizoral (ketoconazole) or Norvir (ritonavir) with Flonase, there may be an increase in blood concentrations and associated side effects. Use of Flonase is not recommended during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

In case of allergic reactions such as hives; swelling on tongue, lips, face, or throat; difficulty in breathing etc. seek emergency medical help. Doctor should also be consulted in case of serious side effects which include:

  • Runny nose
  • Nosebleeds
  • Un-healing of wound
  • Redness, sores, or white patches in mouth or throat
  • Eye pain
  • Nausea, chills, fever, flu symptoms,
  • Weakness, vomiting
  • Crust formation around nostrils
  • Noisy breathing
  • Blurred vision, formation of halos around lights

Some effects can be less serious and include:

  • Headache
  • Nosebleed
  • Back pain
  • Loss of interest in sex
  • Disturbed menstrual cycle
  • Sinus pain
  • Cough
  • Sore throat
  • Patches within or around nose

Side effects associated with long term use of the drug are as follows

  • Long term use of corticosteroids (Fluticasone) at higher doses results in suppression of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis.

·      The local side effects include nasal irritation (sneezing, burning, dryness, and soreness), nasal ulcerations, Candida albicans infections etc.

·      Gastrointestinal side effects such as vomiting, nausea and dry mouth have also been reported.

  • Respiratory tract side effects such as epistaxis, impaired wound healing, ulcerations, Candida albicans infection, and nasal septal perforation.
  • Mild headache and dizziness has also been reported.
  • Ocular side effects such as increased eye pressure, cataracts and posterior capsular cataracts are some of the most common side effects.
  • Corticosteroids such as Fluticasone weakens the immune system thus pose a danger of infections.
